Why should I consider Nelson as my next destination?

Nelson is a scenic town located in the Kootenays on the shores of Kootenay Lake and surrounded by the Selkirk Mountains. It offers year-round adventure, vibrant culture, and a welcoming community. In winter, Whitewater Ski Resort is just a short drive away and is known for its deep, dry powder, ideal for skiing, snowboarding, and backcountry adventures. In the warmer months, visitors enjoy mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, paddleboarding, and exploring the region’s hot springs and historic sites. The town itself is full of character, with heritage buildings, independent shops, great restaurants, and a strong arts scene – all within walking distance from the Dancing Bear Inn.

What makes the Dancing Bear Inn a great alternative to a hotel or motel in Nelson?

The Dancing Bear Inn offers affordable accommodation with a warm, community-focused atmosphere. Guests can enjoy spacious communal areas, including our cozy lounge, a fully equipped kitchen, and two outdoor patios with BBQs. It’s a friendly and relaxed environment where people from all walks of life feel welcome. Whether you’re travelling solo, with friends, or as a couple or family, the hostel offers a great mix of comfort, value, and the chance to connect with other travellers.

Can I book both private and shared rooms at the Dancing Bear Inn?

Yes. We have nine private rooms that can sleep between two and four people. We also have two shared co-ed dorm rooms. Dorm rooms can also be booked privately and sleep up to 8 people; a great option if you are travelling with a large group but would like your own room! All guests have access to shared bathroom facilities, a fully equipped kitchen, and communal spaces. Whether you’re looking for a more private stay or a budget-friendly option, our hostel provides flexible accommodation in a central Nelson location. 

What if I need to cancel my booking?

We offer free cancellation up to 24 hours in advance of your booking when booked direct. Any cancellation or modifications must be made before 4:00 p.m. the day before check-in. Reservations made through third party booking sites are subject to different terms.
Note: For statutory holidays and New Years Eve, we require 48 hours’ notice. Please always refer to our terms and policies for the most up to date conditions.

Where can I park?

We have eight first-come, first-served parking spaces. Parking is also free on the street in front of the Dancing Bear Inn from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 a.m. and all day on Sunday.

What are your front desk hours?

Our front desk is open from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Please leave us a voicemail if we are unable to pick up the phone @ +1(778)463-5319  or send us an email @ info@dancingbearinn.com and we will get back to you.

When can I check in?

Our reception is open from 4:00 p.m – 8:00 p.m. For check in’s past 8pm, please refer to our “Late Arrival” policy.

When do I need to check out?

Check-out time is 10:00 a.m. You are welcome to continue using the communal spaces after check-out, but we do need access to the room by 10:00 a.m. to prepare it for the next guest.

What if I’m going to be arriving after reception closes?

If you know you are going to be arriving after reception closes at 8:00 p.m., please contact us by phone or email to let us know so we can prepare for this. We will need you to fill out our “late arrival agreement” in order to send late arrival information. Please note that your first night stay will be processed on the card we have on file.

How do I make a reservation?

Please see our booking page for rooms and rates. All bookings require a valid personal credit card. The name on the credit card must match the photo ID presented at check-in. For best rates always book direct.

What are the payment options?

We accept Mastercard, Visa, Debit Cards, and Cash (CDN). We do not accept Amex or $100 notes. 

Note: A valid personal credit card is required to make a booking. We do not accept cash deposits.

Are you pet friendly?

Due to the shared facilities at the Dancing Bear Inn, no animals are permitted in the hostel, with the exception of certified guide or service dogs.

Do you have onsite laundry facilities?

Yes! Laundry facilities are available at the hostel from 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. It’s $3 for a wash and $3 for a dry.

Do you have a maximum stay?

The hostel has a maximum stay of 14 days within a calendar year. Requests for longer stays can be made to management and are subject to approval.

Where can I smoke?

We are a strictly non-smoking facility, both inside and anywhere outside on our property.

I am not a Hostelling International (HI) member - can I still stay with you?

Absolutely! You do not need to be an HI member to stay with us. If you would like to enjoy discounts at HI hostels around the world, you can sign up for a free HI membership after making a reservation.

Do you offer breakfast?

While we don’t offer breakfast, our fully equipped communal kitchen is available for guests to prepare their own meals. If you would prefer to eat out, our front desk staff are happy to recommend excellent local cafes and restaurants nearby.
